Theben AG sharpens brand profile: With Human Centered Building Automation against the energy and climate crisis

(Frankfurt a.M./ Haigerloch, 2nd Oktober 2022) Ever since it was founded, Theben AG has been dedicated to developing products that support the efficient use of energy. What began with the invention of the staircase timer by company founder Paul Schwenk in 1921 has developed into a wide range of products for the conscious use of the resource 'energy'. A subject area that has taken on a new, almost existential urgency due to the dramatic development in gas and electricity prices.

Paul Schwenk, great-grandson of the company's founder and CEO of Theben AG, sees the building sector as being primarily responsible for saving energy: "The building and real estate sector is one of the world's largest CO2 emitters and must finally take effective measures to reduce its high energy demand and CO2 emissions," says Schwenk. Theben's answer to this challenge is: human-centred building automation.

Man as the adjusting screw

At Light & Building in Frankfurt, the family-owned company is presenting this strategic approach to a wider trade audience for the first time and explaining what is behind it. "We humans have caused climate change and we are the only ones who can stop it. Human Centered Building Automation therefore focuses on people and not on buildings. The goal is to only install as much energy-intensive building technology as necessary. The key to this is efficient building measurement and sensor technology that determines how much energy is actually needed and must be provided to the users of a building," Schwenk explains.

Meeting the energy and climate crisis

With Human Centered Building Automation, Theben AG has a fast and at the same time sustainable instrument for combating the energy and climate crisis. Paul Schwenk: "In the short term, it can be used to reduce energy consumption in the building sector smartly and for the user without sacrificing comfort. In the medium term, it helps to further reduce energy-intensive building technology and in the long term, with the help of appropriate architectural concepts, to do without it altogether."
Pilot projects such as the innovative building concept 22/26 by the Austrian architectural firm Baumschlager Eberle show that this is already technically feasible and that Human Centered Building Automation in combination with Human Centered Architecture is capable of significantly and sustainably reducing the CO2 footprint in the building sector.

Focus on technical building equipment planners

With its new strategic orientation, Theben AG intends to increasingly address technical building equipment planners in the future. "Saving energy and reducing energy-intensive building services are currently among the greatest challenges in the building sector. With Human Centered Building Automation, we are providing building services planners with an effective tool for quickly and effectively activating energy-saving potential and for making existing buildings sustainable, energy-efficient and fit for the future," explains Thomas Sell, CSO of Theben AG.

Focus products at Light & Building 2022

The new brand positioning basically covers the entire Theben product range. At the trade fair stand in Frankfurt, however, three products are highlighted that are not only new but also particularly "human-centred" and thus ideally convey the idea of the new brand profile. With thePixa presence detectors, the Dali lighting control system and the LUXORliving smart home system, smart comfort functions and energy-saving potential do not contradict each other, but complement each other. The same applies to Theben's solutions around the smart meter gateway "Conexa 3.0", which offer the energy market environment trend-setting solutions in the areas of energy management and energy infrastructure.
